Edit Panasonic DMC-GH4 AVCHD/MOV/MP4 video in FCP X

I’m trying to figure out the best workflow to edit 4k video in FCPX. I’m shooting on a Panasonic DMC-GH4. I don’t think the native codec (H.264, Linear PCM) is compatible with the log and transfer workflow, so I’m assuming there’s no way around converting all the original footage to Apple ProRes. Is this correct?

Well, had a play with Panasonic DMC-GH4 yesterday. The GH4 features a 16.05-megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor and a 4-CPU Venus Engine, capable of capturing high-resolution JPEG and RAW stills, as well as UHD 4K 3840×2160 30p/24p and cinematic DCI 4K 4096×2160 video at 24p. The Panasonic GH4 also delivers video quality surpassing many professional video cameras. Video can be recorded in a variety of formats, from efficient AVCHD and AVCHD Progressive, to 200 Mbps All-Intra and 100 Mbps IPB MOV and MP4 formats. As you know, one vast advantage of 4K video, even in a world of lower display resolution, is the ability to crop, stabilize, or adjust for rotation in post, without IQ loss. What I eagerly want to know is Panasonic GH4 4K to FCP(X) workflow. Will Panasonic DMC-GH4 AVCHD/MOV/MP4 video be compatibility with Final Cut Pro(X)?

Well, according to my testing, the 4K video was restricted to editing in Final Cut Pro X, and the .MTS, .MOV or .MP4 format is not supported by FCP. If you want to import Panasonic GH4 AVCHD/MOV/MP4 to FCP X or FCP 6/7, we will need to do some preparation before editing. Since Apple ProRes Codec is the best editing video codec for Final Cur Pro, so we can use UFUSoft AVCHD Converter for Mac to convert Panasonic GH4 4K AVCHD/MOV/MP4 to ProRes 422, 4444 codec(1080p would be the best settings.), which will save you both time and trouble, and all you need is to drag the result videos for prompt editing.
